Welby Starburst Mid Century Modern 12 Point Atomic Era Black & Brass Knob Clock

The Starburst Clock

If it wasn’t already self-explanatory – I am starting a new weekly series entitled {time warp}. While I’m not quite ready to give a house tour, we are amassing quite the collection of authentic mid-century loveliness and every piece is begging to be seen! I am a thrifter at heart and will always be most excited by the beautiful pieces that I find by my own devices, but since we moved into our new home (an intact MCM 60’s single-level ranch) I have enlisted the help of a local antique’s dealer to keep an eye out for some items on my wish list. We text each other, we are kindred spirits AND I get 10% off every purchase, what’s not to love? Though Jeff dreads every sentence that starts with….”hey, our antique dealer just texted me…” It never bodes well for his wallet. Though she mainly deals in early American antiques, she has a soft spot for mid-century style and is just tickled when she picks something out and I love it.

Which brings us to today’s time warp – the starburst clock. A little history first – these clocks were very popular and a casual, atomic-era staple in many homes spanning from the 1940’s to the 1960’s. George Nelson was a very influential clock designer during that period and his designs were frequently imitated by other designers and mass manufacturers. The imitations are just as desired and collectible, although an authentic George Nelson inspired design from the Howard Miller Clock Co. is iconic and undoubtedly very expensive.

I’ve been seeking a starburst clock since we moved in. They aren’t the most difficult thing to find, but you have to keep in mind that I live in the middle of Kansas. Classic mid-century modern items in working condition don’t show up here very often! This is the Welby starburst clock that I was lucky enough to get my hands on without traveling to a metropolis or paying shipping fees (hooray!):

We have black granite surrounding both of our fireplaces, and I am addicted to gold tones – so for now this pretty girl fits right in. There is a bit of corrosion on the brass knobs that I have not attempted to clean up yet, and it is quite the dust collector as you can see in the pictures, though I am quite pleased with it’s condition for it’s age!

So my fellow mid mod collectors – what starburst clock(s) have you had the pleasure of getting your hands on? Hit me up, send me pictures, tag me on Instagram – I would love to see your pretty time piece! In the meantime, stay tuned for next week’s {thursday time warp}!
