Thrift Finds From The Dungeon

I may have endangered our lives a little bit today – but {E} and I made memories and that’s all that matters right….? In all seriousness, there is a thrift shop in our hometown that is slightly scary. Local readers feel free to message me personally, I’m not going to throw them under the bus publicly BUT you probably know which joint I am referring to! The place is poorly lit, I counted eleven buckets catching rain dripping through the ceiling from the rain outside, and I stepped on an extension cord that was sitting in standing water. It couldn’t be helped, the place is packed to the hilt and I tripped…while my life flashed before my eyes (only slightly kidding).

In the past I never ventured to the back room, but my search for budget mid-century modern has taken my thrifting to new heights. Good gravy, to my total surprise the owners have shoved all of their 50’s, 60’s & 70’s items into one giant, glorious room (and into another side room I didn’t even know existed)! INCREDIBLE. I will now refer to it lovingly as “The Dungeon” and as far as I’m concerned, it is one of Hays’ best kept secrets. Not everything was in great condition, but there was an enormous selection and I actually had to be picky about what I took home. We have pretty much covered all we need by way of big furniture right now so I didn’t take home as much as my inner thrifter would have liked, but it was fun to dig. As in literally climbing over chairs and hoping for no spiders 🙂 I am still dreaming about a mint condition red and chrome dining room table with 5 chairs that was begging me to take it home for only $85. But Jeff immediately nixed that plan – he said we are not decorating from the 1950’s. 🙁 It was so pretty.

This pretty piece came from the Goodwill today. It spoke to me as soon as I walked in the door and for $2.99 I didn’t even bat an eye. Gorgeous Fenton amber hobnail swung glass vase. This piece cleaned up nicely and is now gracing one of our stone mantels. Hopefully the first of many mid-century Fenton’s and other hand-blown glass!

Culver Glass Company Devon Old-Fashioned Glass Tumblers

Culver Glass Company Devon Old-Fashioned Glass Tumblers

I bought this set of four tumblers half-jokingly to match a set of dining room chairs that I bought at Goodwill a while back (check out my Instagram to see the blue velvet beauties). The blue on the glasses matches the velvet on the seats perfectly. When I got home, I realized they were marked “Culver”. After a little research I found out that the Culver Glass Company was the creator of lavish and oppulant cocktailware of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Couldn’t be more perfect, right!? They were famous for stunning glassware in 22-carat gold. After more research, I have deduced that this set is from the late 1960’s to early 1970’s (indicated by the block lettering). I have not been able to find a picture of the blue striped anywhere (only black and no-color), but I believe they are from one of their executive lines (Mad Men anyone?), most likely the Devon Old-Fashioned glasses.

Vintage Round Metal Golf Basket

Fun metal vintage round golf basket (missing the bottom rung) though it’s fine for my purposes, I have put it in the garage to corral some small garden supplies.

This lamp is probably 80’s, so not the mid-century fare that I am mostly searching for – though sometimes you just have to bring pieces home that make you happy! The vibrant color is what originally drew me to it, though the quirky spackling and diamond shapes are really fun. I could not get the color to cooperate on the first picture so I just de-saturated it so you can see the decoration on the ceramic. The shade is wonky and the shape is not my style, I will be replacing it as soon as I can find a white one that I like.

Westclox Big Ben Cream & Gold Oval Alarm Clock

I found this Westclox Big Ben gold & cream oval wind-up alarm clock. Isn’t he a handsome little guy? I am developing an affinity for vintage alarm clocks, haven’t met one that I didn’t love yet. This one has replaced my bedside digital alarm clock, I love love love it.

The mystery of the day is this beautiful robins egg blue Acme Craftware USA lidded jar. It is VERY similar looking to the cookie jars made by Acme in the 1940’s & 1950’s, but it does not have the same texture, nor does it say “Cookies” on the side. Very odd indeed, either this is a fake or a reproduction, or a mistake – I am not really sure. Regardless, it is in perfect condition, the color is beautiful, the gold stripes are striking and it’s a perfect addition to my bookshelves to house my Scentsy bricks!

I apologize in advance for the poor lighting in these pictures – it was just a quick shoot while I was cleaning up the garage to make room for our new mower. I believe this to be a Mid-century modern cane blue velvet tufted club arm chair, thought I’ve still got some research to do on this chair. The wood seems too “new” to be mid-century, and I’m not sure if tags on the bottom were common back then. Regardless, it will be a fun project. If I can get the velvet cleaned up, then it will be a nice, sturdy sitting chair in our master bedroom!

Though I’m having fun thrifting and would love to do it more, real life responsibilities still await! It was unseasonably cold this week, my poor girl had to attend swimming lessons while it was 68 degrees outside! {L} was snuggly warm packed under a blanket in his stroller while we watched. In the middle of July, this weather is certainly odd. Perfect weather for thrifting, terrible weather for swimming!

Have a blessed day!
